Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy incorporates various modalities such as electrical muscle
stimulation, ultrasound, ice, and heat which are known to help in the
healing process.
- Electrical muscle stimulation helps a muscle contract and relax
on its own. Through this process, it can help relax and fatigue spasm
or tight muscles that can be causing pain. Electrical muscle stimulation
can also help strengthen muscles after injury as well as promote blood
flow to the area to help the healing process as well as increase circulation
to the injured area.
- Ultrasound is used to penetrate and treat tissues deep below the
surface of the skin. Ultrasound targets areas that and a heating pad
or wrap is unable to penetrate. Ultrasound is designed to help break
up scar tissue, adhesions, as well as help increase circulation to
the injured area.
- Heat is used to help increase blood flow to a specific area. It
helps relax the muscles and blood vessels, causing an increase in
circulation, helping with the healing process.
- Ice is used to help decrease swelling as well as pain. Ice causes
blood vessels and tissues to constrict which in turn will force fluid,
blood, etc. to be pushed out, causing swelling and inflammation to
decrease. Ice can also be used to help decrease pain.
